Thanksgiving 2015 | Oh my pie.

This Thanksgiving was really relaxed. We woke up and relaxed for a bit before baking our pies. Since my brother-in-law Bruce was baking two pies, we decided to have a little pie competition. I decided to make Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Pie with Oreo Crust (which I have to add is a new recipe tried for November 2015...see #my101in1001) and Dan decided to make his Award Winning Apple Pie. Before I go on, let me tell you the story behind Dan's pie.

When Dan was in high school, his dad urged him to participate in Talents for Christ. He really didn't want to, but his dad said, "Snap a few photos and enter in for photography." So, Dan took his very basic point and shoot camera, snapped a few pictures and entered the contest. To his surprise, he won first place. The second year, his dad said, "Enter photography again!" So, once again, Dan took a few pictures, not even really trying, and entered the contest. No one expected Dan to win again, but he did! First place a second time in a row! The third year, Dan's dad suggested that he enter again, but Dan said absolutely not. So, his dad said, "You should bake a pie." Dan figured there was no way that he would win in the baking category. He decided to make a sugar free apple pie since his dad is a diabetic. He tried various recipes tweaking the flour, apples, sugar substitutes, etc. in order to create the perfect pie. When he entered the pie in the contest, he watched the little old ladies savoring his pie. And once again, Dan one first place for his pie! After this, Dan declared that he was done with entering contests. He hadn't made the pie since... until this Thanksgiving, almost 10 years later.

My pie required to bake at 425 for 15 minutes before turning the heat down to 350 and then would continue to bake for 40 minutes. Since I was feeding Elli at the 15 minute mark, I asked Dan to turn the oven down and reset the timer. He did...but in double checking, he accidentally turned the timer off. And that resulted in my crust slightly burning. :(

That night, as we judged each other's pies, I teased Dan about sabotaging my pie so that he could win again. In the end, Bruce's strawberry rhubarb pie won our little competition. I teased Dan and said, "I would have voted for your pie, had you not sabotaged it!" It's all good though-- at least my cousins liked my pie (they found out about the mishap and that I made it after the fact).

Our Thanksgiving feast was quite delicious! We've always blended our Filipino roots with American food for Thanksgiving. My dad made caldereta, mashed potatoes, asparagus, rolls, and much, much more!! My brother's fiance's brother Pen made the turkeys. Yes-- two birds!! And oh my soul, it was the best turkey I've had! It was so deliciously moist and oh so yummy!

The rest of Thanksgiving involved everyone passing Elli around. This was the first time that my aunts, uncle, and cousins met Elli. We even Face Timed with some family friends to show off Elli. It was a really special treat for everyone. Towards the end of the night, my mom had to take Elli into another room to calm her down because she was getting overstimulated with all of the people. Looking around at all of the people at my parents house, I was again reminded how blessed we are to have an amazing family support system.

The night ended giving Elli a warm bath, putting her to bed, and watching a couple episodes of The King of Queens. Despite the low key Thanksgiving we had, it's definitely one I'll want to remember forever.
