How I Enjoyed Disney While Pregnant

I was looking through old blog posts and found this one... quite timely as I am in my second trimester with my second baby. While we aren't going to Disney anytime soon, although, I wish I could, this was a great memory on how I enjoyed our impromptu trip to Disney World... while I was about 20 weeks pregnant. Just call me crazy. But, seriously, I still look back at that time and it was one of the most fun impromptu weekend trips we've taken.

Written originally May 2015

During our lunch break, two weeks ago, Dan and I were sipping our coffees when I had a random thought: "I wish we could go to Disney for Memorial Day weekend."

As soon as those thoughts crossed my mind, Dan looked at me and said, "We should go to Disney."

*Mind Blown* We have TOTALLY got this husband-wife unagi down. ;-) (Props if you just caught that Friends reference)

Anyways, fast-forward a week and we were on our way down to Orlando.

Wait. Aren't you pregnant?

Yes. Yes, I am.

You're crazy!

I know. And don't worry, a lot of people thought so too when we told them where we went for Memorial Day weekend. What crazy person goes to Disney while twenty weeks pregnant? This girl does. And you know what? It was still just as magical and just as fun! So, how did this crazy pregnant girl survive three parks in two days in 90 degrees and 120% humidity?

ONE || The most important step is to first consult your doctor before even making plans to go to Disney! Everyone is different and every pregnancy is different. Do NOT go to Disney if your doctor thinks you will put your baby and yourself at risk! I cannot emphasize this enough! Once your doctor gives you the green light, start planning!

TWO || Wear comfortable shoes. (Pregnant or not!)

Everywhere else, I am a flip flops and sandals girl. However, knowing that I would be walking around for the entire day, I opted for my Nike tennis shoes. Thank goodness I did, because my feet were exhausted by the end of the day! After dinner, as my feet were starting to ache, so I changed into my Nike sports sandals. Oh. My. Goodness. It was a major foot-saver! If you're going to bring an extra pair of sandals, make sure they have a lot of support and cushion like sports sandals. The extra cushion will give your feet a nice break.

THREE || Wear super light clothing. Also, don't forget to bring a hair tie (or two!)

Being pregnant, I tend to sweat more than normal. I decided to wear a tank top with my shorts. The first day, I wore jean shorts. Huge mistake!! I felt so sweaty throughout the afternoon and I was not comfortable at all! The second day, I wore running shorts and felt so much better! Also, if you have long hair like I do, make sure you have a hair tie on you. I didn't have one the first day and there were so many times I just wanted to throw my hair up in a messy bun. Also, I couldn't find a place that sold hair ties... go figure.

FOUR || Stay hydrated!

Unlike many amusement parks, Disney allows you to bring drinks into the park. We each loaded up on a 33-ounce bottle of Smartwater, a 20-ounce bottle of Powerade, and brought our own water bottle for refills. We made sure to drink throughout the day. We did buy water in the park towards the end of the day, but better to spend money and keep hydrated than pass out! Also, if you order food, you can ask for a cup of water which is free!

FIVE || Fast passes are your friends.

If you've never been to Disney, fast passes are tickets to skip to the front of the lines for rides and shows. They can be very hard to get and popular rides often run out of passes. Now, you are able to reserve fast passes ahead of time online. This is awesome because you can reserve some of your favorite "pregnant-friendly" rides without waiting in the long lines! Some of the popular rides, such as Soarin' at Epcot, have waits that go up to 120 minutes and trust me, you don't want to wait in that horribly long line, especially if you're pregnant! We reserved passes for the Haunted Mansion in Magic Kingdom and Nemo and Friends, Soarin' and Spaceship Earth in Epcot. We weren't able to reserve any fast passes in Hollywood Studios.

Again, please consult your doctor before going on amusement park rides!!! I was twenty-weeks pregnant and cleared by my doc, but that doesn't mean that will be the case in every situation!

SIX || Look up other activities and rides that are pregnancy-friendly.

I'll be honest, even though I had been to Disney a dozen times, I was a little bummed that I wasn't able to ride a lot my favorite rides such as Splash Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain. However, don't be terribly discouraged! I quickly learned that despite not being able to ride the "big kid" rides, Disney provides a ton of other fun rides that are safe for pregnant women! You can check out Disney's website to find out which rides are safe. Actually, being the paranoid person I am, I double checked Disney's website multiple times throughout the day regarding rides we wanted to do. There are also plenty of cute shows to see in the parks and if anything, you can enjoy the air conditioning.

SEVEN || Indulge in the yummy food!

Since we pregnant ladies can't enjoy all the thriller rides, that just leaves time for us to indulge in all the yummy food! We had lunch reservations at Belle's castle which was the most adorable place I had ever eaten. Oh, and I most definitely indulged in the world famous Disney Dole Whip!

EIGHT || Finally, take it easy!

Plan ahead so that you can stroll through the park. Don't spend your energy on wandering back and forth from one side to the other side. Make a wish list of shows and rides you want to see and do and make an itinerary. Your feet will thank you. Most importantly, enjoy yourself!

Here are a few pictures from our trip. Oh, Disney World, til we meet again!
